It was during a dinner party at Claude and Francois Lalannes’ home in Ury near Paris that Madame X, the couples friend and an early collector, fell in love with their candelabras. Created especially for Yves Saint-Laurent, they were destined to be placed in the music salon of her iconic 55 rue Babylone apartment. Claude Lalanne spent years on a series of fifteen spectacular mirrors for the famous commission and the candelabras were meant to bring the final touch to the ensemble. That pair, numbered 1/2 and 2/2 A, was the beginning of the edition, yet Lalanne only created three large models (92.5 cm high) during that time, including our example, formerly owned by Madame X, numbered 1/2 C.
